What To Do Right Now If a Pipe Bursts

A burst pipe is one of the few plumbing problems that gets worse by the minute. A single broken line can release hundreds of gallons into your home in an hour — soaking drywall, flooring, insulation, and everything stored nearby. The repair itself matters, but the first thing that matters is stopping the water. If you are reading this with water already running where it shouldn't be, work through the steps below first, then call us.

Stay calm and move in this order:

1. Shut off the main water valve. This is the single most important step. In most Denver homes the main shut-off is in the basement, a utility room, or near where the water line enters the house. Turn it clockwise until the water stops.

2. Turn off electricity in the affected area — if it is safe to do so. If water is near outlets, appliances, or your electrical panel, switch off the breakers for those areas. Never step into standing water near electrical sources; if in doubt, skip this and wait for help.

3. Turn off the water heater. Once the main is shut off, switch the water heater to its lowest setting or off, so it is not heating an empty or draining tank.

4. Drain the faucets. Open cold-water taps, starting at the lowest level of the house, to drain what is left in the lines and relieve pressure. Flush toilets once to empty tanks.

5. Move what you can. Get furniture, electronics, documents, and valuables away from the water. Start soaking up standing water with towels or a wet vacuum if you have one.

6. Call a plumber. Call Speed Plumbing at (720) 670-6361. Tell us where the break is, whether the water is shut off, and what is flooded.

7. Document the damage. Take photos and short videos of the break and everything the water touched. This helps with an insurance claim later.

Sergey was awesome. He went above and beyond to make sure that our complex gas line was installed in time for the holidays. He worked in very cold temperatures and did a beautiful job. Everything he did was very high-quality work, and it was done with a lot of care. I would recommend him and his team to anyone.

After we got a new sink, we had another plumbing company come reinstall our garbage disposal. About 6 weeks later, it started leaking. I contacted the same company, who never responded. I also contacted several other companies, including Speed Plumbing. Sergey was the cheapest by far and was available the soonest. He and his assistant, Ed, did an amazing job. They explained why my garbage disposal needed to be replaced and provided a better disposal than I currently had. All for under $400. Sergey also identified several issues with my plumbing that no one had ever mentioned before. He didn't pressure me to do the repairs then, but simply promised to provide a quote and give me the time to decide. We will absolutely call Sergey for any future plumbing needs.

Great company. Excellent communication, on time and reasonable pricing. They sent photos and videos of what they found and kept us updated on what they were doing. This was a rental unit of ours. Now they are our plumbers going forward for our rentals and our own home.

Sergey saved the day again!!!! I have used him before and believe that he is my plumber forever. He has shown up and literally finished a project that was at a standstill and my bathroom was inoperative. Sergey and his technician did an outstanding job and the craftsmanship is top quality. Also provided honest and competitive pricing. Please try this plumber because they are reliable and trustworthy.
